We have room for over 4,000 students in our wharenoho horakai (catered) and wharenoho horakai kore (self-catered) communities. We’re confident we can find you somewhere welcoming, comfortable, fun and safe. We’re proud of our friendly and supportive communities. You’ll be looked after by our Resident Managers, Resident Coordinators and their teams of Resident Advisers who live on site. At Career Development and Employability Services (CDES) our purpose is to help you create your future through your studies and beyond. Our services are free for all University of Auckland students and accessible from day one up to three years after you graduate. Whether you need your CV checked, want to find your career direction, or would like to connect with employers in specific industries, we are here to help you.

Through CDES, you have access to your very own online career management systems, MyCDES and MyCDES+. Both platforms offer many resources. These include self-service tools such as CV and cover letter checks, interview preparation, and e-learning courses. You can also book appointments with us and places at our events. In addition, MyCDES+ is home to NZUni Talent Jobs, our job board where you can search for casual jobs, internships or graduate roles.

Our team of professional and friendly Career Development and Employability Consultants support students from all faculties, with additional specialised support for Māori, Pacific, international and postgraduate students. Our consultants run workshops on general career topics (such as LinkedIn profiles, CVs, cover letters, and networking), as well as offering faculty-specific workshops and one-on-one appointments.

We also offer you to chance to connect with employers so you can start gaining valuable work experience while you study. You can attend one of our many events to engage with employers, such as our popular career expos, recruitment events, and employr-led workshops. We also offer global and/or remote internship or work-based learning opportunities where you can work with companies on real-life projects, be mentored, and add experience to your CV.

Most undergraduate programmes at the University of Auckland include a General Education component where you include courses that are outside of your main fields of study. The programme, unique in New Zealand, consists of high-quality, intellectually challenging courses taught by some of the University’s best teachers and researchers. The General Education component in your degree will prepare you for the workforce, with a broad range of skills and understanding to complement your specialist knowledge.

Play sport, get fit and have fun. If you’re keen on sport, whether it be social or competitive, we have a wide range of opportunities to offer you. We organise social sports leagues, interfaculty sports, tertiary sports, marine sports, and even high-performance support for those competing at the elite level.

If you’re looking to keep fit and healthy, sign up at the University Recreation Centre at 70 Stanley Street right by City Campus. Our interim Sports Centre is also fully open on Wynyard St. Our affordable memberships allow use of our facilities, where you’ll find a wide range of fitness equipment, multiple studios, group fitness classes and more.

Additional programmes and services include personalised programmes and consultations, boxfit, self-defence, personal training and more. We recognise the crucial role that sport and recreation play in the wellbeing and success of our students and staff. To maximise students’ sporting and fitness opportunities, a brand-new state of the art Recreation and Wellness Centre is currently being built at 17 Symonds Street. This fantastic facility is due to open in 2024. Please note: if you live in one of the Halls of Residence, Recreation Centre membership is included in your package.

Under the leadership of Pro Vice-Chancellor Pacific, Associate Professor Dr. Jemaima Tiatia, the PVC Pacific team work across all aspects of student life, from recruitment, graduation and postgraduate studies. Our office support our Pacific student clubs and associations, coordinate our Tuakana network to assist Maori and Pacific learning, engage with the university around scholarships and curriculumn and run amazing programmes like Level Up! And UniBound. Our team are second and third generations of Pacific navigators who have made the University of Auckland their home. Are you 20 years old and over, seeking a change in direction or looking for a new career opportunity? Now could be the right time to start university study with our New Start programme! In this 12-week part-time programme you could gain entrance into degree studies in Arts, Business, Law, Education and Social Work. When you join the New Start whānau (family), you will gain the skills and confidence to begin university study.

Tōia ki Waipapa is a uniquely Māori approach to support transitioning Māori students in to University. This five-week programme gives tauira the opportunity to take a course over Summer School which can go towards their degree and kickstart their on campus experience.

The main objectives for Tōia ki Waipapa are; Whanaungatanga, manaakitanga and kotahitanga, we’d like to create a culturally safe space to give tauira a place to succeed, together as a whānau while receiving the appropriate learning support in preparation for University. In addition to your lectures you will also have the opportunity to attend workshops to best support you throughout your journey.

In addition to a HOP card with a monthly pass loaded on it, students will also have the opportunity to apply for a summer accommodation scholarship. Registrations are currently open to all Māori school-leavers regardless of whether or not they attain University entrance. Students who do not receive an offer of place from University or attain University entrance will be supported by the team to discuss alternatives. UniBound Summer is an academic transition programme for Pacific school leavers to support them in beginning their university journey right. We assist our students through their first academic course, that is credited to their degree, and allow them to experience real lectures and coursework in a safe and inclusive environment. We partner these with workshops and seminars to allow them to grow as Pacific leaders, developing skills through our centre for innovation and entrepreneurship, conducting exercises in our leadership through learning slot, understanding conceptions of Pacific health with our clinical team from Campus Care Te Papa Manaaki, and even a few outdoor events to enjoy the summer sun. Summer Start is open to all school leavers and provides support with your university transition, with the added benefit of getting you a head start by gaining credits before Semester One.
